The Climax Observatory closed its doors in 1972, but its mission lives on at the Mauna Loa Solar Observatory, founded by NCAR in 1965. Scientists collected groundbreaking, breathtaking pictures of the corona and the great bundles of magnetized plasma, called prominences that occasionally burst from it.
