This house was heavily damaged by an exceptionally vicious windstorm that struck Boulder, Colorado, on 17 January 1982, causing more than 10 million dollars in damage. The city of Boulder is located against the eastern foothills of the Colorado Rockies, where the mountains meet the plains. Downslope winds occur in areas where mountains obstruct strong air currents. These winds sweep down over Boulder from the eastern slope of the Rocky Mountains, sometimes causing gusts of more than 100 miles (160 kilometers) per hour that can cause considerable damage to buildings and trees.
