One of the most damaging windstorms ever to strike Boulder, Colorado, took place on 8 January 1969. The city of Boulder is located against the eastern foothills of the Colorado Rockies, where the mountains meet the plains. Downslope winds occur in areas where mountains obstruct strong air currents. These winds sweep down over Boulder from the eastern slope of the Rocky Mountains, sometimes causing gusts of more than 100 miles (160 kilometers)per hour that can cause considerable damage to buildings and trees.
