Show moreData centers such as the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) provide supercomputing resources to the scientific community. These supercomputers (clusters) are designed for high performance computing and data access for a diverse set of national and international scientific user community. Security is an essential and integral part of these supercomputer and securing large supercomputers presents unique challenges, the tighter the security the lower the usability, a common phrase used to describe this is the "Security -v- Usability See-Saw". The main objective of my project was to identify the unique challenges of securing large HPC based supercomputers (clusters) and provide a security design architecture that provides a perfect balance between the security and usability of a supercomputer (cluster) and how these design challenges scale with the size of the supercomputer (cluster).
