Automated surface weather stations from the National Center for Atmospheric Research have been used in networks for over two decades to obtain measurements required to understand a broad range of atmospheric phenomena on the mesoscale, or medium scale. Researchers from NCAR and collaborating universities around the country have used such networks to study thunderstorms, squall lines, tornadic storms, hailstorms, severe downslope winds, air quality, and wind shear.
