This solar corona, viewed in polarized light, was photographed in May 1980 by the coronagraph-polarimeter aboard the Solar Maximum Mission satellite. Designed by a scientist from the High Altitude Observatory, part of the National Center of Atmospheric Research, the coronagraph took detailed pictures of ejections from the sun's outer atmosphere, or corona. The twisted loops of material are evidence of magnetic fields.
