These views of four small sun-grazing comets were taken by the coronagraph used to photograph the corona, or solar atmosphere, from the Solar Maximum Mission satellite. The comets are thought to be remnants of a breakup of larger comets near the sun at an earlier time (100 to 1000 years ago). This slide shows the comets named SMM-2, SMM-4, SMM-5, and SMM-7, which were among ten comets discovered by Solar Max.
