Hundreds of students and other members of the public come to the Mesa Laboratory of the National Center for Atmospheric Research to take part in special activities. One of these events in recent years was a celebration of Earth Day, an informal holiday founded in 1970 to generate awareness among children, as well as policy makers and academics, about the fragility of the planet's natural resources such as forests, waters, soils, and fish, on which societies have learned to depend.
