Show moreOne of the most impressive natural phenomena known to human kind is the thunderstorm. But, along with the impressiveness and beauty there is also the power that the storms possess. Most aspects of a storm are fairly easily visible, understood, and predictable. However, this is not the case when it comes to forecasting thunderstorms in the region on the leeward side of the Rocky Mountain. In particular, 30 minute forecast of location and time in the Denver vicinity is the main concern. To do such a study, you need storms that last longer than 30 minutes; which tend to be storms that either merge or in other words complex storms. Forecasting these storms is exceedingly difficult due to the effect of the easterly flow over the mountains. Even with improved technology, such as the implementation of Doppler radar, which is used in these circumstances to detect convergence zones, there is still a lot left to be desired. However, being able to differentiate factors that could lead to the formation of complex storms would be a great help for forecasting these phenomena. Therefore, the purpose of this research is to determine the thermodynamic conditions that are most favorable for the formation of complex long-lived storms at the beginning of the day. Show less
